Figures released this morning reveal that the number of people on payroll rose by 35,000 between February and March to a record number 29.6 million – showing that the Government's Plan For Jobs is working.

As we move beyond the pandemic, it is right that the priority both locally and nationally is to get people back into work and help businesses to thrive, and it is clear that the plan is working.

New figures released this morning show that the number of payroll employees rose by 35,000 between February and March to a record number of 29.6 million employees on payroll – with the employment rate increasing and over 1.2 million vacancies in the UK.

Locally, there were 2,175 actual claimants in Norwich North constituency, which was 3.9% of the population aged 16-64, this is compared to 4.2% nationally.

These statistics confirm that the Plan for Jobs is bringing economic security to workers, more trade for businesses, and greater prosperity here in Norwich.

Last month, I welcomed the announcement of a series of measures in the Spring Statement to support businesses and jobs in Norwich, building a stronger, more secure economy.

This Spring Statement set out plans to create a new culture of enterprise, which will support sustainable growth by focusing reforms of the tax and regulatory system on three priorities: Capital, People, and Ideas.
