Hormone Replacement Therapy

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 23 February 2023 10:30

From 1 April, women in England will be able to get cheaper hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause support, through a new prescription prepayment certificate.

This new certificate will reduce the cost of HRT to less than £20 per year and will save hundreds of pounds each year for the women affected. People prescribed HRT will be able to apply online for a digital or paper version of the certificate. When collecting HRT products, patients will be able to simply show the certificate to the pharmacist and complete the exemption declaration on the NHS prescription form.

Menopause can create challenging and, in some cases, severe symptoms for some women, and a vast number of women find that HRT can make a huge difference to quality and enjoyment of their lives. I am sure that many of my North Norwich constituents will be delighted with today's announcement, which will make HRT more affordable.

Some women are lucky enough to sail through menopause without a hitch, others soldier on with troublesome symptoms, but whatever your menopause journey, at least the worry about the cost of treatment has now been taken care of, and I am delighted that the Government has delivered on offering affordable and accessible treatment to women, so that no one has to suffer in silence due to the cost of treatments.

The introduction of the certificate delivers on a year one priority for the Women’s Health Strategy for England. Published last summer, the strategy sets out an ambitious new agenda for improving the health and wellbeing of women and girls and to improve how the health and care system listens to women.

How do prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) work?

A prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) can be applied for and used by patients if they do not have an exemption from prescription charges. A 12-month certificate means that a person can have all the prescribed items they need for just over £2 per week.  A 12-month PPC can be applied for by direct debit instalments.

A new PPC is being introduced called the HRT PPC, which will be valid for a period of 12 months and covers a list of HRT items There is no limit to the number of items you may obtain using the certificate. A PPC can be applied for directly from some pharmacists, or by phone, online or by post. Further details on where to apply will be released in due course.
