Family hubs

I am delighted to see that Norfolk has been chosen by the Government as one of 75 eligible local authorities to take part in the Family Hubs and Start for Life programme in England.

The aim of the Family Hub programme is to join up and enhance services across Norfolk for constituents, ensuring all parents and carers can access the support they need when they need it, during the precious first three years of a child's life.

It means that Norfolk will receive up to £6m of funding to further develop its prevention and early help services for families with children and young people up to the age of 19 (or up to age 25 if they have special educational needs and disabilities), many of whom live in north Norwich.

The Family Hub and Start for Life programme will:

  • provide support to parents and carers so they are able to nurture their babies and children, improving health and education outcomes for all,
  • contribute to a reduction in inequalities in health and education outcomes for babies, children and families across Norwich and Norfolk by ensuring that support provided is communicated to all parents and carers, including those who are hardest to reach and/or most in need of it,
  • build the evidence base for what works when it comes to improving health and education outcomes for babies, children and families in different delivery contexts, so that we can continue to build upon what works best for our children.

The first 1,000 days of life, from conception to age 2, is a critical phase during which the foundations of a child’s development are laid. If a child’s body and brain develop well then, their life chances are improved, so I am pleased that Norfolk's parents, carers and children are set to benefit from this vital scheme.
