COVID-19 Update: Schools

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 20 March 2020 13:32

A number of constituents have contacted me regarding the prospect of school closures as a result of COVID-19.

For my part, I want to ensure all my constituents have access to straightforward, accurate and up to date information, so I am updating my own website and Facebook page regularly as the situation evolves.

Schools will be closing their gates on 20th March 2020 until further notice. Except for children of key workers and vulnerable children, as part of the country’s ongoing response to coronavirus.

The link below outlines specifically what the Government are considering essential workers throughout this time of crisis.

Examples of these workers include NHS staff, police and supermarket delivery drivers who need to be able to go to work to support the country’s fight to tackle coronavirus.

It is important to underline that schools, colleges and other educational establishments remain safe places for children. But the fewer children making the journey to school, and the fewer children in educational settings, the lower the risk that the virus can spread and infect vulnerable individuals in wider society.

I have also provided a link to the latest information about the closure of schools and educational settings for parents and carers as I think this may be of some use.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/closure-of-educational-settings-information-for-parents-and-carers/closure-of-educational-settings-information-for-parents-and-carers#critical-workers

This information covers:

  • Closures of schools, childcare and other educational settings
  • Exams
  • Vulnerable Children
  • Critical workers
  • Resources and support.

As a parent who has already been required to self-isolate, I do know how anxious a time this is for everyone.

I will be doing my part locally to keep my website and social media updated with each major announcement and will also aim to support Norfolk's fantastic community response so that we can all help each other.
