Chloe Smith working with police, council and local people to beat graffiti

Chloe Smith, Member of Parliament for Norwich North, and local police Inspector, Gary Brotherhood, are celebrating the success of their work with the council and local residents and businesses to clear graffiti in the north city.

Chloe, through her regular meetings with the local police and council, raised the issue of graffiti on behalf of a number of concerned constituents.  A ‘paint out’ initiative was started, focused on the Silver Road, St. Clements Hill and Sprowston Road triangle where 64 sites were identified.

Based on a ‘hot spot’ analysis of graffiti displayed last year compared with the same time this year, police have observed a considerable reduction in the problem.  Residents are pleased with a drop in the ugly vandalism.

Chloe is continuing to work with the police, council, residents and businesses on the problem – along with other issues whenever raised – and urges residents and businesses to continue to report incidents of graffiti to Norwich City Council on 0344 980 3333

Chloe comments:

“Residents and businesses are pleased with the promising results from this campaign.  In my view there is no excuse for the vandalism of graffiti. This sort of anti-social behaviour costs businesses and private residents considerably, in disruption and money, and it’s not fair.  So I’ve worked with the police, council and local people to do something about it.  If you spot graffiti again in the Silver Triangle or elsewhere in the north city, let us know about it.”

Inspector Gary Brotherhood, from the Norwich North Safer Neighbourhood Team, said:
“The project has and continues to be extremely successful in removing offensive graffiti from areas across the neighbourhood and improving its appearance.

“Officers have worked alongside the city council and the Norfolk Youth Offending Team (YOT) throughout the campaign which has been well-supported by members of the community, keen to help improve the area in which they live and work.”
