Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, today welcomes the recruitment of more prison officers as she prepares to quiz the Justice Secretary on behalf of constituents. Chloe’s constituency includes HMP Norwich and following on from casework for constituents who work in the prison service she will ask for an update on the government’s prison officer recruitment programme.
She will tell the Commons that “prison officers serving in HMP Norwich, in my constituency, and nearby HMP Bure, work incredibly hard under difficult circumstances” and will urge the Justice Secretary to do everything possible to support prison officers in their work and conditions.
The government recruitment drive was intended to add 1,700 new officers by spring this year, addressing safe staffing of prisons and improving work rotas for officers.
The Prisons Minister Andrew Selous visited HMP Norwich last month.
