Chloe Smith MP welcomes positive steps in cutting through red tape

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 07 September 2012 12:35

Member of Parliament for Norwich North, Chloe Smith, today welcomed the progress made in cutting red tape for Norwich’s businesses. Chloe regularly works with the Federation of Small Businesses to discuss what red tape affects Norwich firms.

The last Labour government presided over the equivalent of six new regulations every working day.

In contrast, in 2011, this Government:

  • Capped the cost of new regulations, through the One In One Out system;

  • Identified 600 regulations we shall scrap or substantially overhaul, through the Red Tape Challenge;

  • Agreed to overhaul employment tribunals, to be fairer to small company employers;

  • Scrapped plans to extend training regulations, saving small and medium enterprises £388 million per year

  • Implemented Whitehall guidance to end the routine gold-plating of EU regulations.

Additionally, Ministers are overhauling over 1,000 pages of guidance for planning; have agreed to free up entertainment licensing for small venues; and have agreed to remove up to one million self employed from Health & Safety rules designed for multi-national corporations.

Chloe comments:

“Red tape has been a stranglehold on our local businesses for too long.”
