Member of Parliament for Norwich North, Chloe Smith, will tomorrow, Saturday 21st July, officially open the new permanent home of the Chermond Gym.

The Chermond Gymnastics Club was founded in June 1980 by Cherie and Raymond Alcock to pursue their vision of an alternative choice of healthy, safe and constructive activity for children and young people living in Norwich.

Recently the club has hit the news in its efforts to find a new permanent location.

Originally offering training in Girls Artistic gymnastics at the Norman Centre in Mile Cross,  a sports Acrobatics section was opened at the Meadowview Community Centre, Hellesdon Low Road in 1981. In 1984 the two sides of the club moved to the Gurney Middle School, Ranworth Road and united under one roof.

The club enjoyed a long period at the Gurney premises until 2003, even though the school was closed down in the late 1980s, but were evicted from the Gurney premises in 2003.

Having welcomed the club recently to visit Parliament, Chloe is delighted to be opening the Gym’s new permanent home.

Chloe comments:

"I’m delighted to be able to join Cherie, Raymond and the girls at the Chermond Gym to open their new permanent home. Cherie and Raymond’s tireless work has secured their future. With the Olympics only a week away, what better way to inspire more young people to follow Chermond’s  example and get stuck in to sport. "
