MP for Norwich North, Chloe Smith, has welcomed news of the exciting events taking place in the East of England to celebrate the 2012 Olympic Games.
Speaking at a briefing with the regional teams who are responsible for bringing the spirit of the Olympics to the whole of the UK with a wide range of sporting and cultural events, Chloe called on local schools, businesses, youth groups and families to join in the festivities.
The timetable of events will culminate with arrival of the Olympic torch in Norwich on Wednesday 4th July, when there will be an evening celebration in the City. An interactive map with the full street level route is now available at: www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay.
On Monday 25 June every school in the UK is invited to celebrate the athletes and cultures of the world for London 2012 World Sport Day, presented by Lloyds TSB. Schools, communities and parents can mark the occasion in a number of ways including creating the flags of the nations you're supporting this summer, and highlighting sports, music and food from around the world. Get Set, the London 2012 education programme, are releasing resources every month to help schools to plan their day. London 2012 World Sport Day is the opening day of Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week. Chloe urged local schools in Norwich to take part.
The East of England is heavily involved in the Games. Some interesting facts and numbers about the region:

23 – The number of Pre-Games training camps already confirmed for the region.
183 – Sporting, educational and other community projects now officially Inspired by London 2012.
400+ – Games-related contracts awarded to businesses from the region.
1,467 – Local schools already signed up to the new Olympic and Paralympic-style School Games.
2,600+ – Local schools and colleges taking part in the Get Set programme, to celebrate Olympic and Paralympic values.
17,000+ – Companies registered with Compete For, an online ‘dating service’ for businesses hoping to win Games-related contracts and other major opportunities.
4,600,000 – Number of extra visitors expected to come to the UK over the next four years, spending more than £2 billion and generating nearly 60,000 jobs.
1bn+ – the value (£s) of the Olympic Park contracts already won by businesses from the East.
