Today, Chloe Smith MP attended the launch of a DVD targeting binge-drinking amongst young people.

Norfolk Constabulary’s pioneering DVD to educate teenagers on the dangers of binge-drinking was officially launched at the University of East Anglia and is entitled “Your Night, Your Choice. The DVD has been compiled in response to national concerns about the dangers of drinking particularly amongst young people.

Chloe welcomes the launch of the DVD and comments:

'I support this initiative to help young people make informed decisions about their own lives.  I am particularly pleased that Norfolk can lead the way nationally on this important matter.

'It's vital that drinkers - younger or older, whether buying drinks in supermarkets, pubs, music venues or anywhere else - take responsibility for their own actions. People should be perfectly able to enjoy a responsible drink and so, with a bit of help like this DVD project, young people can get better informed about going too far.'

Anne Campbell who commissioned the film said:

'The DVD is five minutes long and is shown at the start of a lesson. It encourages teenagers to enter debate regarding the actions and possible outcomes of the actors in the short film. It raises questions like “What if she did this?” or “What if he did that?” and encourages the students to think about their own actions.

'Supporting the DVD is an education pack which includes a lesson plan, a drink awareness game that challenges students to make informed decisions. There are group worksheets which pose questions like “Why do people drink alcohol?

'The lesson also includes a group drama session where students write and perform a short play. The theme is about making sensible decisions based on what they have seen and learnt from the DVD.

'To complete the lesson students are asked to fill in a binge drinking awareness reflection sheet which will evaluate their understanding of binge drinking.'
