Medicine and Dentistry Education

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 11 August 2021 15:03

In response to the unprecedented situation caused by Covid-19, I am pleased to see that the Government has adjusted the cap on medical and dentistry places, so that more students than ever will have the opportunity to study on these courses in 2021, and in the long term help boost our future NHS workforce.

Medicine and dentistry courses have always been popular, but this year has seen a 20 per cent rise in applications, meaning many well-qualified candidates may otherwise miss out on the opportunity to become a doctor or dentist, which I wouldn’t like to see happen. I have been fighting hard to see Norwich North receive both the workforce, and the extra provision of practices to provide the quality care constituents need.

The Government has provided this additional funding to expand medicine and dentistry courses for the coming academic year, supporting universities to take on over 9,000 places in 2021–22 – more than ever before.

Expanding the number of places ensures that every student who achieves their grades can fulfil their potential of becoming a future healthcare leader, creating opportunity and boosting our future NHS workforce in Norwich and wider afield.

I know that students have worked incredibly hard over the past 18 months, so I am happy to see that the Government continue to put their best interests first to ensure they can progress on to the next stage of their education training or career.

The Government want to match student enthusiasm and ensure as many as possible can train this year to be the doctors and healthcare professionals of the future, helping me in my campaign for Norwich North to receive the health services which are fit for the 21st Century.
