Chloe Smith: let's act to clean up our air in Norwich

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 28 October 2019 09:25

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, today calls for action on the quality of our air in Norwich, and pledges to help bring people together to clean it up.

Recent data shows that Norwich’s air is dirtier than New York, Birmingham and Newcastle and air pollution contributes to thousands of deaths a year, according to health experts.

Today (Monday), the Environment Bill is debated in Parliament which will provide more local powers to tackle air pollution. It will enable responsibility for solutions to poor air quality to be shared across councils and other relevant public bodies. The existing law means responsibility sits only with local authorities, yet other bodies may be able to help.

Chloe says:

“We should be protecting and improving the environment for future generations. So I welcome this government’s environmental action and ambition. I want to explore with our local councils how we can deal with our air quality together, and I’m keen to bring public bodies together to get things done. I will work in Parliament to help make this possible, and make our air better in Norwich.”
