Chloe Smith calls for top ambition in transport for Norwich

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, today calls on councillors to be ambitious in bids to improve Norwich’s transport, and on Ministers to respond, as she lobbies on behalf of her constituents.

The Greater Norwich area was awarded just over £6m in the first tranche of money from the government's Transforming Cities fund, and a dozen cities are likely to get a share of that £1.2bn fund, while Greater Norwich could also get a share of a separate £90m Future Mobility Fund to cut single occupancy car use.

Money is to encourage people to travel via low carbon, sustainable means of transport, with a significant focus on public transport, cycling and walking.

This could mean one of the biggest transformations of transport in the city centre which Norwich has ever seen.

Bids are due in to the Department for Transport at the end of November.

Chloe, who has supported the bid since its start and is lobbying Ministers for Norwich’s share, says:

“This is really important for us in the north of Norwich because it helps people get to jobs.  It should also cut congestion and help us go greener.  I urge the councillors to be as ambitious as possible in their bid.  I will carry on working hard in Westminster for Norwich to get the transport we need.”

Improvements in Norwich North constituency could include the Heartsease Fiveways roundabout, Cromer Road, Aylsham Road, Norwich Airport and the nearby industrial estate including the Aviation Academy, Sprowston Road and Yarmouth Road.
