Brexit Day

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 31 January 2020 12:00

Today is Brexit day. At 11pm today the UK will cease to be a member of the European Union. I wanted to provide an update for constituents and reflect on this historic day.

The Government have delivered on their key manifesto commitment to get Brexit done by January 31st. The UK will now enter the implementation period, during which the Government will be negotiating our future relationship with the European Union.

Negotiations will be tough; however, the Prime Minister has been clear that the implementation period will not continue after December 2020.

Now that we have left the EU the UK Parliament will regain control over our laws, money and our borders. The UK has a fresh start to negotiate new trade deals, improve legislation and rekindle relationships with other allies across the world.

It is important to note, that whilst we are leaving the EU, we are not leaving Europe. The UK will remain a close friend and partner to all our fellow European neighbours. We will continue work closely with our neighbours in terms of business, cross border crime and foreign affairs.

Whether, three to four years ago, you supported Brexit or not, now is the time to rally behind the UK and make the most of the opportunities that Brexit presents. Let’s turn our backs on rancour and division.

As your MP, I will continue to work hard in Parliament to help move our country forward and focus on delivering a bright, exciting future for Norwich and Britain in this new chapter of our history.
