Reporting back: Extra funding for the NHS

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 14 August 2019 13:41

Ensuring the NHS has the investment it needs is part of Chloe’s 6 priorities for Norwich North. In her absence whilst she is on maternity leave, her office is pleased to share the following information with you.

Recently the Prime Minister announced an extra £1.8 billion for NHS frontline services, which will help to deliver more beds, new cutting-edge equipment and additional wards at hospitals across the country. This is in addition to the £33.9 billion already announced for the NHS by the Government last year – the biggest cash injection in its history.

This includes a £850 million package for 20 hospitals to upgrade outdated facilities and equipment – helping to improve patient care and save more lives. Alongside this the Government is also providing a £1 billion investment to allow existing upgrade programmes to proceed and tackle the most urgent infrastructure projects, meaning new intensive care wards, children’s units and new mental health facilities.

Thanks to the Prime Minister as well as Chloe who has consistently lobbied for investment in the NHS in Norfolk and Norwich, £69.7 million has been made available to provide Diagnostic and Assessment Centres in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Kings Lynn to aid rapid diagnosis and assessment of cancer and non-cancerous disease.

A further £40 million has been pledged to fund the Hellesdon ward rebuild scheme, which will deliver 4 twenty bedded wards on the on the Lower Plateau of the Hellesdon site.

The additional £1.8 billion is new funding. The Government is able to provide it thanks to the hard work of the British people, and the fundamental strength of the economy which will ensure quick access to quality healthcare for those who need it.

The Government’s renewed focus on NHS infrastructure will ensure the new nurses and doctor’s being recruited have the best and latest facilities possible, and that patients across the country are getting the world-class care on the ground. This funding is already being greeted, with Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of the NHS saying: ‘This is a significant start to the much-needed capital investment so that our nurses, doctors and other NHS staff will be able to care for their patients in modern facilities with state-of-the-art equipment.’
