Race Disparity Audit

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 20 October 2017 13:08

I received a letter from the First Secretary of State on the recent publication of the Government’s Race Disparity Audit. This was a bold report that aims to tackle a very difficult topic in modern British society today – namely, whether we receive equal access to public services, regardless of our race. I have included a copy of his letter with this post for you to take a look at.

The First Secretary of State sets out the Government’s view vividly by saying:

“We believe that how far you go in life should be based on your talent and how hard you work – and nothing else. The UK has come a long way in spreading equality and opportunity, but we want to go further. That’s why the Prime Minister ordered the Race Disparity Audit to examine how people of different backgrounds are treated across areas including health, education, employment and the criminal justice system.”

Some of the findings of the audit are indeed uncomfortable and do present a challenge to public services. However, in commissioning this audit, the Prime Minister has been clear that we will not shy away from addressing the most challenging issues society faces. We are prepared to face up to the difficult challenges that have been ignored by previous governments.

This comprehensive audit has been published online, I have included a link to the website below. I encourage you to take a look at its findings.

The Government is determined to build a country that works for everyone and by bringing these injustices to the surface will now give us the opportunity to address them and banish them to the history books.
