Chloe Smith, Member of Parliament for Norwich North has welcomed announcements made by the government that those who are claiming Universal Credit will be entitled to payment advances to ensure they can pay their bills.

Universal Credit payments will be made to claimants on a monthly basis, whereas other former benefits being merged into Universal Credit might have been paid weekly or fortnightly. Rather than causing claimants to wait a potential six weeks for their next payment during the transition, the government has announced that claimants can avoid falling behind on bills through an advance payment that would be payable within 5 days, or an emergency payment payable on a same-day basis.

Chloe comments on this announcement saying: “The Government is getting this right.  Universal Credit is badly needed because it will help more people into work and off benefit, and my constituents can be reassured that the Government caresabout the way it will be introduced”.

Chloe had previously written to David Gauke, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, seeking reassurance that the government would minimise delay in payments for her constituents.

In announcing this help, David Gauke said: "I can announce today that we are refreshing the guidance to DWP staff to ensure that anyone who needs an advance payment will be offered it up-front.

"Claimants who want an advance payment will not have to wait six weeks. They will receive this advance within five working days. And if someone is in immediate need, then wecan fast track the payment, meaning they will receive it on the same day.

"As Conservatives we do not believe, we have never believed, that we can turn our backs on those most in need. As Conservatives we believe in a strong and compassionate welfare state that helps everyone fulfil their potential."
