Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, has welcomed the latest figures on employment in Norwich North. The number of people in Norwich North claiming Job Seekers Allowance fell by 1,134, a 58% drop since 2010.

Commenting on the announcement, Chloe said:

‘This is great news for all those in our city who want to work hard and get on. With employment in East Anglia at record levels and unemployment in the UK at a seven year low, the number of people in Norwich North relying on Job Seekers Allowance has fallen by 58% – that’s 1,134 more people with the security of a job.

‘These figures show that Britain’s economic plan continues to create jobs and increase pay, with wages rising strongly in real terms. Across the UK there are nearly three quarters of a million job vacancies, demonstrating the level of business confidence in our economy.

‘But we not must not be complacent. Recent data indicates that our trading partners’ growth is slowing, which could be bad for Britain. All our progress would be put at risk if we don’t carry on with our plan to build a resilient economy, delivering the economic security of a country that lives within its means.’

Total employment in the UK is now at its highest level ever. Over 350,000 more people are in work across the UK than a year ago and unemployment is at its lowest level since 2008. Since 2010 over two million new jobs have been created; 260,000 in East Anglia.

The figures also show that average pay growth is now 3 per cent, while prices are falling, meaning more money in our pockets. Youth unemployment among those not in full-time study has also fallen to its lowest level in a decade. As MP for Norwich North, Chloe has played a leading role in the Norwich for Jobs project, which has succeeded in halving youth unemployment in the city.
