Chloe Smith: Latest Britvic and Unilever Update

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 24 October 2017 10:37

Chloe Smith MP today met the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in Westminster, to discuss the possible closures of Britvic and Unilever’s operations in Norwich.

Chloe emphasised that around 350 jobs could be at risk, as well as the historic, iconic Colman’s brand.

She asked Greg Clark to consider potential sources of government support, such as the ideas contained in the Industrial Strategy including a food and drink sector deal and Research and Development (R&D) funding should this be needed upon the outcome of the companies’ reviews.

Chloe asked Mr Clark to back the Local Enterprise Partnership in assisting the companies to find local solutions.

The Secretary of State agreed, saying:

“Colman’s and Britvic are iconic British brands and ones that have a unique association with Norwich, with mustard production having taken place at the same factory since the 1860s.  I was pleased to meet with Chloe who has been working hard with all those involved and I value her commitment to continuing to work with the Local Enterprise Partnership and all interested parties to ensure a bright future for this important site.”

Chloe continues to work closely with government to achieve positive results for constituents employed at Britvic and Unilever in Norwich, and has also met Ministers from Defra, DWP, and International Trade.

She comments:

"This was a productive meeting. It is still early days and first and foremost it is for the two companies to support their employees through their consultation or review and, I hope, to decide to stay in Norwich. But in case it's needed, I have been working hard behind the scenes in Westminster to identify extra options for my constituents and to back Norwich jobs and heritage."

The meeting did not involve Clive Lewis.
