Chloe Smith expresses concern as Nat West announce branch closure

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 14 July 2023 11:57

I was disappointed to learn of the announcement of the planned closure of a NatWest branch on the Boundary Road in north Norwich.

The Boundary Road branch is scheduled to close on Tuesday 31 October 2023.

In response to the announcement I have written to the NatWest Group Chief Executive to raise concerns about the closure, and urge NatWest to retain its branch for the benefit of the business community and nearby residents.

My letter says:

“Firstly, whilst I appreciate that personal banking has changed dramatically in recent years, I note that in your report the NatWest Boundary Road branch was regularly used by 237 business customer(s) in 2022. This finding reflects the branch’s location among busy industrial estates, important to the city and regional economy.

“Secondly, the branch also serves residents from nearby housing, where many use cash and need accessible facilities.  With a range of issues recently affecting nearby bank and Post Office branches, the community needs resilient and good quality services in the area.

“Thirdly, I am concerned that affected employees may be offered roles much further afield, which may present them with additional and unexpected difficulties and personal expense at a tough time.

“I would urge you to re-consider if this branch could remain open in order to serve the business community and nearby residents. I would be grateful for your assurance that business customers and vulnerable retail customers will be fully supported to continue to use convenient and accessible banking facilities, and staff will be offered suitable alternatives.”

I am concerned and disappointed that yet another local banking branch is closing.  Local residents and businesses lose the Mile Cross HSBC branch at the end of July, and the community need resilient and high quality services in the area.

The industrial estates and facilities in the north of the city really matter, with businesses big and small and significant regional assets like the airport.  I want the local economy to thrive, with the right services that people need.

Customers that still need NatWest branch services will be able to use NatWest Norwich Gentleman's Walk branch which is open Monday to Saturday morning, has wheelchair access and cash machines inside and out.

NatWest has produced a leaflet outlining their reasons for the Boundary Road branch closure, which is part of a programme of nation-wide closures:

Constituents are advised that following the closure, the nearest free to use cash machines are located at: Euro Garages on Sweet Briar Road, Lloyds Bank at 343 Aylsham Road, and Asda.  Post Offices at Mile Cross, Drayton Road and Hellesdon offer a range of counter services including balance checking, cash withdrawal, cash deposits, and cheque deposits.
