Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, will tonight present a petition to the House of Commons. The petition was collected by students at Notre Dame High School in Norwich, who then invited Chloe to present it to Parliament.

Inspired by the words of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’, the students call upon the Government to show international leadership to secure fair and ambitious agreements on tackling climate change and poverty, urging that carbon emissions must fall to prevent global temperatures rising above the dangerous threshold of 1.5◦C.

Commenting on the petition Chloe said:

“I was delighted to be asked to present this petition by students at Notre Dame High School in Norwich.

“The petition comes alongside important talks in Paris in which the Government has set out a clear long-term goal for the world to achieve net zero emissions by the end of the century. This sends a strong signal everyone that the move to a global low-carbon economy will become a reality, thereby providing the confidence necessary to deliver the scale of investment required. It’s great to see students in Norwich engaging in these global issues which will directly impact upon the world which they will inherit.”

World leaders have spent the past two weeks gathered together in Paris to reach a global agreement on climate change. A copy of the students’ petition will also be delivered to Downing Street.

In addition, Chloe is presenting a second petition about climate change from Norwich Central Baptist Church congregation members to the Energy Secretary, Amber Rudd.
